Weekly Newsletter for 10/14/16

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you for the donations towards our treasure box and for the Husky Treat awards for 2nd grade. If you have any gently used toys/items that could be used as small prizes for our treasure chest, or any unwanted paperback books for our classroom library, they would be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of field trips that are being planned. Please make sure that you are fingerprinted and have the volunteer paperwork in the office well ahead of time as the process can be lengthy.

We currently have many students experiencing the flu in our classroom and at our school. With the change in weather, it is important that your child is dressed in layers as the temperature can change drastically throughout the day. We have been discussing proper etiquette so that we can avoid getting sick.

This week in English Language Arts, we have been continuing with story structure and learning/practicing the routines for our literacy centers. We are talking about how to sustain our independence while working and learning how to use the iPads for Kids A-Z and how to use the Word Work center. We will be continuing with these procedures as we learn about the specifics required from each activity and work towards working independently. For writing, we are currently working on our brainstorm, write, and share portion of our personal narrative unit. Your child is writing stories that have happened to them and learning about what real authors do when they write stories.

In math, we are working on our counting and operations and base-ten. We are working with subtizing, “tenness”, and using multiple problem solving strategies. One of our goals in math this year is to clearly communicate mathematical thinking, which includes defending their answer and explaining the “how” and “why” for their math work.

Here are next week’s homework links:

Have a great weekend!
