Dear Second Grade Parents,
Your child will be doing an animal habitat report that is due on Friday, April 8th.
The animal habitat report will give your child a chance to research an animal that was randomly selected in class and report facts back on their report and to the class. This is to encourage them to learn more about an animal that they would not have normally chosen. You should guide them to pick non-fiction animal books at the library, review how to use an encyclopedia, and even monitor them while they research online. These are all skills they will use throughout their education.
These animals were selected from this website for ease of research: http://www.d118.org/crown/Webquests/habitats_for_second_grade.htm
Please help your child practice for their oral presentation as they will not be able to reference their writing during their presentation.
Directions for Shoebox Diorama Project:
- Turn shoebox (no bigger than an adult-sized shoebox) on its side.
- Decorate the inside of the shoebox to look like your habitat. For example, a forest habitat may have trees, leaves, and grass.
- Add a 3D (model, pictures either printed or hand drawn) of your animal in their habitat.
- On the back of the shoebox, attach a piece of paper with your child’s name, the name of your animal, and 4-5 sentences about your habitat.
Directions for Oral Presentation:
- Student will turn in their report, bring their shoebox up to the front of the class, and introduce themselves and their animal
- Student will tell us 3 facts, one about their animal’s habitat, one about what food it eats, and one interesting fact.
- At the end, students say thank you to let their audience know that they are finished.
This is going to be a really fun project for your child!
