Weekly Newsletter for 9/20/13

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you for coming to back to school night yesterday. It was wonderful meeting everybody. If you signed the sheet for a parent conference, I will be contacting you to arrange a time to meet. I will be out of the classroom next Tuesday and Thursday for professional development for English Language Arts and Math.

English Language Arts

This Week’s Story: Meet Rosina

Working on: Writing complete sentences, predicates, using a dictionary, parts of speech – adjective, verb, and noun.

Math 

Currently on: Topic 2 – Addition Strategies. We will be taking our topic test next week and starting Topic 3 – Subtraction Strategies.

Notes: Please review basic math facts with your child (1 digit + 1 digit addition and subtraction). Your child have these memorized and not rely on using their fingers to add.

Chinese

Current Textbook Lessons: Shuang Shuang 2.4 and Better Chinese Lesson 13.

Things we did:

• Learning the vocabulary and phrases to run the calendar routine independently.
• An art lesson about Monet’s waterlily paintings, talked about the different shades of colors found in his artwork, the school supplies that we would need, instructions, and then we blended our own water lily scenes with different colored paints.
• Practiced our dictation words, different variations of reading aloud, writing, singing songs, searching for our vocabulary words in our text.

Announcements

• Check your child’s backpack for returned papers. Take note of anything with a check mark or an “incomplete” on it, as your child needs additional help or practice.
• Things left in the classroom go to the lost and found on Friday. Please label your child’s belongings with their name and room number to facilitate their speedy return!
• September birthday celebration will be on Friday, September 27th. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday with the class, please contact me.

Volunteers, etc. 

• Weekly volunteers to run small groups (reading, math, etc.) are needed. Please contact me if you can make a weekly commitment.
• Our classroom is always in need of reams of white copy paper and tissues. If you find yourself with any extras that you do not need, they will be gladly taken off your hands 🙂
