Weekly Newsletter for 9/26/14

Dear Room 4 Families,

It was great to meet you this Tuesday at Back-to School Night. If you were unable to come visit our class, the information that was covered is available to view all year under the “Information” tab on the top of our class webpage.

This week your child has been busy with building stamina across their reading and writing. We are working on narrative writing for Writer’s Workshop and establishing the habits that your child needs to be a good writer. We are also practicing independent reading as one of our Daily 5 rotations for building literacy. This week we have been studying the story “Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea” and examining the plot. We are also studying short vowel sounds and practicing our blending.

Our math theme for Unit 2 is Place Value to 100. This unit encompasses all of the ways that a good understanding of place value can be used and the usage of appropriate materials. This includes addition, subtraction, ten-frames, number lines, fact families, base-10 blocks, etc.

Right now there is not a lot of work being passed back home because we have shifted from primarily workbook pages and worksheets to interactive journals, games, and class discussions.

I am working with the second grade team on assessments for progress reports and for the first report card. I will begin assessments sometime next week.

Monday is our SOPA test day. There will be a substitute in the classroom, but I will be on site assessing students in the office.

Berkeley Repertory Theater will be visiting our classroom on Thursday 10/2 for a Storybuilder’s workshop with our class.
