Weekly Newsletter for 11/13/15

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week we started our Geometry unit in math. Your child is learning the names and attributes of different shapes. We are learning the math vocabulary to talk about plane shapes and solid figures, (vertex/vertices, sides, faces, equal, divide, etc). In English Language Arts, we examined the story structure and various elements of Nail Soup, a variation of Stone Soup. Your child made a graphic organizer in their English journals and recorded the characters, settings, and soup ingredients. Next week we will read another variation on the story and they will compare and contrast what was the same and what was different in each story.

Next Thursday, November 19th is an important day! It is the YCT test date (Youth Chinese Test), which is a new assessment to measure your child’s Mandarin skills. Please make sure that your child is at school on time that day and has eaten breakfast, drank water, and had a chance to go to the bathroom in the morning. The last hour of the day will be our Stone Soup celebration. All 2nd grade students will be participating in the event and celebrating by having a small meal together. If your child is a vegetarian, they can bring a vegetarian soup that day to enjoy alongside their classmates. Students will be provided a fun hat to wear during this celebration and we will take a few pictures.

Thanksgiving break will be from Monday, November 23rd through Friday, November 27th.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on the first week back from Thanksgiving break. Monday through Thursday (11/30-12/3) are minimum days. There is no school on Friday, December 4th. Please sign up for your spot via the google document located here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MwbJhJz9SNTl4NyjueOcKacAwiRDk8RMdL6LNHofoZY/edit#gid=0

I will not be sending home paper forms, so please contact me if you are uanble to sign up via the spreadsheet. If you have not picked a date by next Wednesday, November 18th, a date and time will be assigned to you.

Here are next week’s homework links:

Have a great weekend!
