Weekly Newsletter for 9/9/16

Dear Room 4 Families,

We have had quite a busy week in 2nd grade! Your child has been learning about our school rules and classroom expectations. Our school wide rules are:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be Responsible
  3. Be Respectful
  4. Make a difference

Our school behavior policy has changed slightly to support more positive behaviors, which includes a change in our Husky Treat prizes. There will still be a weekly raffle, but now each grade level will receive an award when they earn a collective 50 Husky Treats. Some families have reached out to ask about donations/supplies that Room 4 still need. I have organized a mix of various classroom necessities and wishes on my Amazon Wishlist, which is located here: https://amzn.com/w/2G4WYD2Q6HUQD – All purchases are strictly optional.

This week in 2nd grade, we have been learning how to work together as a cooperative learning community. Your child has been practicing how to be independent learners and to be responsible for their work and behavior. We are learning many rules and procedures in class as we get to learn about each other. In English Language Arts, we have been reviewing long vowel and short vowel sounds, blending words, and starting our “Read to Self” center where your child is engaged with level appropriate books as we build our stamina to become truly independent readers. This center is the first of our literacy centers where your child will be working on improving their reading and comprehension throughout the year.

In Math, we have been learning how to explain our thinking and looking closely at language to help identify how solve a story problem. We have also been working on playing math games cooperatively and helping each other with their learning.

In Chinese language arts, we have been reviewing our vocabulary with commonly used words. We are learning how to run our calendar routine, as well as each other’s Chinese names.

Next week we have a minimum day on Friday, September 16th. Dismissal is at 1pm.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

-Ms. You
