Weekly Newsletter for 9/16/16

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you to the families that have been bringing in donations from our classroom Amazon Wishlist and donating towards our class field trip and assembly experiences this year. If you are interested in donating towards these events, you can donate to Stonebrae PTA or to the office. Please indicate that the donations are for Room 4, otherwise they are added to the general fund.

This week we have been working on routines and assessments. In English Language Arts, we are working on knowing the difference between short and long vowel words. We are also learning the procedures for our interactive English journals. Your child has been learning how to become better readers by reading independently and building stamina for our Read to Self center. As a class, we discussed what independent reading looks like:

  1. Staying in one spot
  2. Reading the entire time
  3. Reading quietly
  4. Ignoring distractions
  5. Having bathroom stamina
  6. Being engaged!

In Math we are working on number sense, subitizing (grouping numbers without counting), addition and subtraction.

In Chinese, we are learning our calendar routine and slowly taking responsibility for different parts until the entire class can run the calendar routine independently without the teacher. In Mr. Chen’s class, he is working on review of vocabulary that your child will need to remember so that they can work towards their goal of writing understandable sentences to form a short paragraph from the words that they already know.

Week 1 homework was passed out on today. Our homework packets are passed out Friday to Friday so that you may have the weekend to get a head start on the packet. The Mandarin dictation words haven’t been formally introduced until Monday, so please hold off on the vocabulary definitions until your child has learned the words in class. Next Friday will be a spelling test on week 1 words. We will alternate our tests, so our next spelling test will be in 2 weeks and your child will be tested on week 2 and week 3 words. This will be the same for Mandarin. Your child’s first Mandarin dictation test will include the words from week 1 and week 2 homework.

Scholastic Book Orders were passed out today. I generally put in orders once they reach over $25. My preference is that you order online from scholastic.com – There is a red banner on the webpage that you can click that will take you directly to our classroom orders. If you go to the page manually, our class code is: J9VJR – If you are unable to complete orders online, my preference is that you pay your order in cash with the order slip in a sealed envelope to save time on paperwork and mailing.

Next Tuesday, September 20th is Back to School Night. This is a minimum day with dismissal at 1:00 pm. Back to School Night will start in the MPR at 6pm. I will be going over the classroom schedule, rules, homework, etc. during that time. We have a very tight schedule on that day, so if you are interested in having a conference about your child, there will be a sign-up sheet available. Since I will be presenting information to parents, please try to arrange childcare accommodations or have your child doing something quietly so they are not disturbing the presentation and so that others may hear what is being presented.

Homework links can be found on the navigation bars on top of the webpage. Here are the links to Week 1 for your convenience.

Thank you!

-Ms. You
