Weekly newsletter for 10/28/16

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you for all of your contributions towards our Halloween celebration. Your child enjoyed doing a craft together and eating treats. They also got a nice goody bag with combined items to take home. Extras were kept in the classroom to be used at a different time for either another party, snack incentive, or treasure box item.

This week we have been learning about Day of the Dead and the traditions and symbols associated with it. Your child learned that it is not the same as Halloween and that it is a holiday celebrated in another country. They learned about what culture means and how people do different things around the world. Your child decorated a paper skull in the style of a traditional candy skull. We have also been learning how to Zentangle, which is a type of meditative drawing.

This week for English Language Arts, we have been learning how to use the classroom library to build book bags with books that are at our “Just Right!” reading level and other books to support sustained and engaged reading. We have been working on how to retell (recount/summarize) a story to include the important elements of what they read, and to tell it in their own words.

In Math, we are working on our base-ten concepts and word problem analysis. We are also focusing on using multiple ways of solving a problem. In math, your child is expected to explain their mathematical thinking and to contribute to a classroom discussion about the math problems that we are working on. They are also using Front Row to challenge themselves with math that is new, but at their level as well. Some students are working on multiplication and division concepts in this program because they are ready to work on this concept, even though it has not been formally taught.

Book orders were sent home today, along with Lifetouch pictures. You can order books at anytime on the Scholastic Website, using our class code of J9VJR, or just click the big red banner on the lower right hand side of the main webpage. Please do not send personal checks to school.

Here are next week’s homework links:

Because of staff development, there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 31st. It will be a minimum day on Tuesday, November 1st. Please plan accordingly!

Have a great 3-day weekend and a Happy Halloween!

-Ms. You
