Weekly Newsletter for 1/13/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child has been working on some very tricky concepts! We have been learning elements of art through Zentangle, a meditative drawing style. Your child has been learning how to create and shade their art. In math, we are working on mental math – using place value to 1,000. If your child has been struggling, I have been sending home work in their backpacks to practice at home. Please make sure you check their backpacks and go through their papers.

This week in English Language Arts, we have been focusing on opinion writing and distinguishing facts and opinions. For our Writer’s Workshop block, we have been voting on our favorite things and learning how to state our opinion and give reasons to support our opinion. Your child is also learning how to expand upon their ideas to be more articulate and focused. During our Reader’s Workshop and our literacy centers, your child is working on making text-to-self connections across a variety of books that they have self-selected. We will continue with making text-to-text and text-to-world connections in the following weeks.

As a friendly reminder, Flat Stanley is due back from his adventure soon! The project is due on Monday, January 23rd. Please make sure your child has looked over the travel journal and is ready to share Stanley’s adventure with the class.

There is no school on Monday, January 16th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Have a great 3-day weekend!
