Weekly Newsletter for 9/15/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

Our class has started to settle in and are transitioning better as they learn the expectations and routines at school. You may start noticing that more negative points are popping on ClassDojo. This is because we have been in school for 3 week and your child is expected to know the routines that we have been practicing and that they are responsible for themselves and their learning. The negative points are to help reinforce the expectations and positive points are also given out to students who are transitioning quickly. Please help your child review classroom expectations when you see negative points for the day.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been reviewing our long and short vowel sounds. As part of building our classroom community, we worked on decorating our classroom with paper hearts uniquely designed by each student. Your child was asked to switch with a partner and we crumpled up each other’s heart. They were asked to fix it and return it back to the condition it was in before. This was an analogy to your child that their actions and words have a long-lasting effect on each other and saying “I’m sorry” or “I’m kidding” does not always fix things, and to be mindful of how we can be respectful and cooperative with each other. In writing, we finished up our “Selfie” project by drawing a self-portrait and decorating our phone covers to complete our writing. We are also finishing up our Back to School flap books. We are getting ready to start Writer’s Workshop once the schedule is set.

This week in Math…

We learned about decomposing numbers and compensation by creating and using “Math Mountains” that represent fact families. Your child identified the total and the missing parts to various math mountains. We have also been working on/creating word problems and identifying specific words that tell us whether or not we should add or subtract.

This week in Chinese…

We have been practicing writing our own Chinese names with correct stroke order and placement. Your child learned how to use the 4 color stroke order (red, green, blue, black) to help them keep track of the order. We have also started our Chinese writing and sharing our stories about “My Family” with the class.

Friday Folders were handed out today and contain important papers from the school, your child’s work, graded papers, and next week’s homework packet. The Friday Folder should be returned to school by next Friday so papers can be filed and passed back to your child.

Some of the content in the homework packet may not have been covered yet because due to popular parent request, the homework is passed out early for busy families to work on over the weekend. It is important that your child completes their homework on time by Friday so that they are properly prepared for their Chinese dictation test. Please help your child build successful study habits by helping structure daily homework time. There is no spelling homework this year. The homework is organized to be about an hour of homework per school day.

This year we have mandatory online homework. More information will be covered at back-to-school night. Part of the accountability for your child’s Chinese homework is to practice and record themselves reading their Chinese passage and sending it to Mr. Chen. Any way that you can record and send to Mr. Chen is accepted for credit. You can use Voki, Vocaroo, take a video on your phone, etc. and e-mail it to him or send him the link on ClassDojo with your child’s name and week number indicated somewhere. Please have your child listen to the Chinese passage and practice daily. Quizlet will be used to help your child practice their dictation words for their dictation test. The activities on the cover page of the homework correspond with the activities found online. Please view the homework links here: https://sites.google.com/site/17to18chen/homework/week1mandarinhomework

Important announcements:

Back to School Night is Tuesday, September 19th from 6-7pm. All families will first meet in the MPR to listen to a short announcement from our principal Ms. Nolting and meet the teachers at the school. Please note that due to our Chinese/English switch, Room 4 and Room 7 will be combining our Back to School Night presentations so that parents from both rooms can meet both teachers and be informed about both classrooms. Due to space constraints, Room 4 Families will meet first for the first session and Room 7 will meet for the second session. If you are bringing your children, please make sure that they are quietly occupied so that they do not disturb the presentation.

The parent volunteer sheet for both Room 4 and Room 7 is up. Your help is greatly appreciated and we would like to utilize your time efficiently! In order to keep things orderly, please sign up online so we know to expect you: https://sites.google.com/site/17to18chen/volunteers

Please make sure that your child has a healthy snack at school. Per our school handbook, junk food, candy, and soda are not appropriate snacks for your child to bring to school. They are unhealthy and do not help your child to focus.
