Weekly Newsletter for 12/22/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child was excited to get into the holiday spirit. We had a fun holiday celebration thanks to the coordination efforts of the room parents from both classes. Thank you for the lovely gifts and cards! I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season with your families.

As a friendly reminder, Rooms 4 and 7 have a no outside food policy. For the safety and enjoyment of each student and the class as a whole, no food can be brought to school on any occasion. For parties and other special events that involve food, the classroom teachers coordinate the menus to accommodate the allergies and dietary needs of the students.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been learning about having accountable partner talk with our reading books. We continued with asking and answering questions and using our post-it work to help guide our book talks after we are done reading our books. We have also been learning about capitalization rules and irregular plural nouns.

This week in Writing…

We have been working on opinion writing by discussing our options and justifying them with a specific reason. We are also distinguishing a fact versus an opinion by identifying and writing our own facts and opinions.

This week in Math…

We have been working on adding money. Please help your child by counting 5’s and 10’s from a random number, and also by identifying coins and counting pocket change together. We learned to count the coins from largest to smallest value.

This week in Chinese…

This is the first week we started learning about sports. The students are really enjoying learning the terms of the week. Please encourage your child to practice writing the terms of the week from memory. The writing goal in 2nd grade is that students would be able to write a paragraph on their own without any help. In science we started discussing the 3rd land form swamp.

Flat Stanley was assigned to your child on Wednesday. If you are missing the assignment sheet, journal, or Stanley template, please check the ClassDojo story for the download. If you are mailing your Stanley for an adventure, please mail him in the next couple of days so that he has ample time to return.

Week 13 Homework will be passed out on Monday. For those who want to get a head start, it will be posted online on Mr. Chen’s website on Friday, 1/5/2018.

Important Dates:

  • 12/25-1/5 – Winter Break – No School
  • 1/8 – School Resumes
  • 1/15 – No School

Have a happy Winter Break and see you in 2018!
