Weekly Newsletter for 1/19/18

Dear Room 4 Families,

Flat Stanley is due to come back to Room 4 on Monday and we will be sharing his adventures with the class throughout the next week. If your Stanley hasn’t returned from a trip or has gotten lost, please let me know if you need a little more time for him to go on a mini adventure at home.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been learning about text connections. We learned that there are 3 different types, text to self, text to text, and text to world. We are making many connections across the various texts that we encounter during our English time. Next week, we will be making connections in the books that we are reading during our reading centers and will be sharing our connections during our accountable partner talk time.

This week in Writing…

We are continuing with opinion writing. This week we learned how to write a closure by restating our opinion in a different way. We are studying other pieces of writing from 2nd grade students and discussing how opinion writing leads to persuasive writing. We are working on writing strong reasons to support our opinion and varying word choice so our writing is not repetitive.

This week in Math…

We started our unit on measurement and geometry. This week we learned how to measure using the centimeter side of the ruler and how to create partner measurements. We are also learning about plane shapes and solid figures. Your child is learning the math terms in order to describe shapes (vertex/vertices, side, face, side, quadrilateral, etc.)

This week in Chinese…

We started the lesson on pets. The students were very excited learning the animal terms. In science we started talking about the landform ocean/sea and have been writing about it. In writing we have a few students left to share their All About Me Writing. When the sharing is done, we’ll begin to write an All About Someone or My Pet piece.
We really want your child to succeed in the Mandarin program. Because most of you don’t speak/use the Chinese language at home, homework is a vital part in helping your child succeed. We certainly don’t want your child to feel like a failure when they get a low score in their dictation test or not being able to read the weekly passages fluently. Please encourage your child to put in the effort in completing the homework. Beginning in the week 16 homework, we’ll add the word writing practice sheet in the homework packet to help your child retain writing the weekly terms correctly. Instructions on how to complete it will be listed on the homework cover page.
