Weekly Newsletter for 1/26/18

Dear Room 4 Families,

I apologize if I have been slow to respond to your messages this week. I have been fighting off the flu. Please remind your child to wash their hands frequently to avoid getting sick. Not as many ClassDojo points were given out this week since I have been in and out of the classroom. I hope to be fully recovered and back in the classroom on Monday.

This week your child has been enjoying seeing and sharing their adventures with Stanley. If your Stanley is still out on an adventure, he may return to the classroom when he is ready.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been working on our unit with text connections. We have been making text to self connections in the books that we are reading during our independent reading time. Text connections can be tricky and will be our focus for the next couple of weeks. After making several text connections in the books that we are reading, we are sharing a book with our partners during our accountable partner talk time. During this time, your child is sharing the title of the book, what it’s about, and the parts in the book where they made a connection.

This week in Writing…

We are almost done learning about the different components of an opinion paragraph. This week we have been working on adding transition words, including words that indicate sequence (first, then, next, last, finally, etc.) and adding them to our old pieces of writing.

This week in Math..

We have been continuing with measurement in centimeters. We have been using our measuring to help us understand our plane shapes and solid figures in our short geometry unit. There has been many new math vocabulary words to learn (vertex, angle, right angle, side, face, etc.) and we have been drawing and measuring the sides of various shapes.

This week in Chinese…
We finished the pets lesson. Students got very excited learning the weekly terms, as they got to pretend those animals. In Writing we wrapped up the All About Me writing piece and will move on to the next genre next week. In Science we finished the landform lake and will move to landform river next.

Homework…

Week 16 homework has been passed out in your child’s Friday Folder. Beginning in Week 16, we have added a word writing practice page in the homework packet. We found that most students can’t retain writing the weekly terms from memory. Please encourage your child to use 4 different colored pens/pencils to write the words in stroke order like we do in class. We recommend that your child wait until Mr. Chen teaches the terms on Monday.
