Weekly Newsletter for 2/2/18

Dear Room 4 Families,

We had a busy week learning as we pass the halfway point of 2nd grade. Many students have been out of the classroom sick. Please encourage your child to wash hands often to avoid passing germs. If your child is sick, please do not send them to school until they are fully recovered.

Progress reports were passed out in this week’s Friday folders. Please sign and have your child return by Friday, 2/9. You can email or message us on ClassDojo if you have any questions or concerns.Comments are written on both sides. English grades are assessed for Trimester 2 reading level standards and on classroom work. Reading level assessments are a long process and have not been completed yet. I may contact you regarding assessing your child after school via ClassDojo.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been continuing our work on text connections. We have taken a step back to refocus on the quality of our connections and using sentence frames to help support rich language. We have been writing our connections on post-its and placing them in our books to share with our partners during our accountable partner talk time. This week we have also been learning about sub-genres for both fiction and non-fiction texts.

This week in Writing..

We are working on our last components for opinion writing and are working on the rough draft portion of the writing process. This week we learned to incorporate several transitions, including when to use sequential ones (first, another reason, in conclusion, etc.) Your child will continue to self-select topics and create several rough drafts next week and will go through the revision, editing, and final draft portion the week after that.

This week in Math…

We have been working with measuring in centimeters. Your child was introduced to the meter stick this week and we have been measuring big items around the classroom. We also measured each other and learned how to display information on a line plot.

This week in Chinese…

We continued our lessons on animals this week. This week and next week we touch on animals that are not limited to pets. Students really enjoyed this week’s passage since it was rhythmic. Next week we’ll go into animal riddles which has been a highlight of 2nd grade in the past years. In writing, we started opinion writing and students are really into writing about their favorite pets. They transferred their opinion writing skills from English to Chinese quite well.

Homework…

Week 17 homework has been passed out. You can view the homework page here: https://sites.google.com/site/17to18chen/homework/week17mandarinhomework

Good job to those who spent efforts in completing the word writing practice in the 4 color stroke order in the homework packet. Your child does not need to fill all the boxes, but is welcomed to for learning’s sake. We are asking your child to practice writing 4 times for each word in stroke order.
