Dear Room 4 & 7 Families,
We had a great 2nd week of school! Thank you to all of the families that have stopped by to say hello and to families that have donated to the class. This week we have been finishing up some projects from last week, continuing with community building activities, and practicing/learning our classroom routines and transitions. A homework project will be assigned on Monday and will be due the following Monday. Please keep an eye out for the assignment sheet in your child’s backpack and for additional information on Monday.
This week in English Language Arts/Writing…
We worked on assembling our “First Week of Second Grade” book, read stories about being respectful towards others, worked on partner talk, and established our morning routine. Ms. You will be assessing reading levels over the next month for both Room 4 and Room 7 and will distribute the Reading A-Z information once it is ready.
This week in Math…
We started our Math Expressions curriculum by learning about math mountains and how they relate to fact families. Yesterday I sent home a parent letter and math mountain flash cards for you to study at home. You do not need to turn them in unless you want your child to show me. They are for you to keep at home and practice. Have your child cover one of the corners and tell you what one of the possible math facts could be and the answer. We have also been working on decoding word problems, doubles facts, odd/even, and math facts under 30.
This week in Chinese…
In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures. We used classroom expressions (stand up, bow, hi teacher, goodbye teacher, goodbye classmates, and sit down); greetings (hello, thank you, good bye); numbers (1 – 10); days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday); colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). By Friday, the booklet on the life cycle of the butterfly should be completed and we began to practice our new materials, MeiZhou Chinese, Level 2, and starting Lesson 1 on pictographs, which includes reading, listening, speaking and writing the text on page 6-7. Several games and songs/children’s rhymes were introduced, played and facilitated in the classroom to increase student learning. They were bingo, four corners, musical chairs, and paper, scissor, stone with the Chinese way to keep track of the winners.
