Dear 2nd Grade Families,
It was great meeting everyone this week at Back to School night. Thank you for supporting your child’s education and helping our classroom. If you were unable to make it to back to school night or have any additional questions, we are always available to schedule a time to meet to discuss your concerns and talk about your child’s progress.
As an important reminder from back to school night, due to various allergies and serious peanut allergies, please do not send nuts in your child’s snack or lunch. This also includes birthday celebrations since cross-contamination may cause an anaphylactic reaction. Unfortunately any birthday cupcakes, treat bags with candy, etc. will be sent home due to the interests of keeping our students safe. If we have any parties that involve food, we will be working closely with parents to ensure that our menu fits the needs of all students.
If you are interested in ordering books from the Scholastic Book Club, there’s an online ordering button in the sidebar of the webpage that gives you access to all of the catalogs. Or you can access it via this link: https://orders3.scholastic.com/J9VJR
You can order any books from any of the catalogs at any time. I submit orders once they reach the minimum of $25. If you are unable to order online, I would prefer to collect cash orders to save time submitting them. Thank you for your understanding.
This week in English Language Arts/Writing…
We have been working on long/short vowels, using context clues, spelling strategies, and studying personal narratives for writer’s workshop. Your child started their first story and are in the middle of taking turns to share their stories in the author’s chair/in front of the class on the projector.
This week in Math…
We have been working on addition strategies including using doubles/near doubles, friendly tens, looking for clues in word problems, equation chains, and strategies for solving 2, 3, and 4 digit addition problems.
This week in Chinese…
We continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers (1 – 31); days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). We practiced our new materials, MeiZhou Chinese, Level 2, and started Lesson 1 on pictographs. We practiced the passage out loud and lesson 1 week 2 vocabulary (mother, son, daughter, score, to separate, doorknob, handle, also, same again, to cooperate, to put things together), and assigned related worksheet as in-class activities. We watched YouTube clips on Moon Festival. We also did a paper moon, a little booklet, and a storyline in observance of Moon Festival as well as played games, sang songs, solved math problems, read books and other kinetic activities.
