Weekly Newsletter for 10/5/18

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

This week your child learned about rural, urban, and suburban communities in Social Studies. We have been learning how to work independently with stamina and how to be helpful citizens at school.

iChineseReader account information was passed out today in your child’s Friday Folder. Please contact Ms. Li with any questions you have concerning your child’s account.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We are continuing with learning the 3 ways to read a book. We have been practicing how to retell/recount the most important events in a story. Your child has been identifying the main characters, the setting, and the plot. For writing, we have been working on stretching our personal narrative stories by adding to the pictures, adding to the words, and then starting a new story. Next week we will start learning how to revise and edit.

This Week in Math…

We learned 2 new strategies to solve word problems. Your child used matching drawings and comparison bars to show their thinking. We are also looking critically at the words in a word problem and retelling it in our own words to help us decide if we are adding or subtracting.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers (1-31); days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). We practiced our new materials, MeiZhou Chinese, Level 2, and started Lesson 2 about food chain where a goat wants to eat a flower. We practiced the passage and lesson 2 week 1 vocabulary (ear, to want, do not, important, green vegetable, green pepper, to have a meal, to give you something to eat, goat, sheep), and assigned in-class activities. We did the bell work, watched the passage overhead, and read picture books. We also was introduced to “how to tell times” and “gravity, motions” as well as played games, sang songs, and practiced math.
