Weekly Newsletter for 1/25/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

Thank you for the continued donations towards the upcoming field trip and bus cost for CuriOdyssey. If you signed up to chaperon, e-mails from the room parents have gone out asking for you to confirm your attendance. No new chaperones are required at this time due to limited space on the bus.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We have been learning about the gh/ph digraph, and also oo, ue, ew spelling patterns. I am going through reading assessments for trimester 2 and sitting with your child one at a time for the upcoming weeks to assess their growth. I may message you on ClassDojo regarding input on helping your child build comprehension if they are currently reading under grade level. In writing, we are learning how to state our opinions using a super sentence, and how to give good reasons using specific details. We have been studying funny mentor texts to understand how to express an opinion and give many reasons to support the opinion.

This Week in Math…

Your child has been learning about plane shapes and solid figures. They are also learning how to estimate in centimeters and in meters. We have been learning about the properties of quadrilaterals, rectangles, and squares as well as other shapes. Your child has been estimating and measuring using rulers and meter sticks/

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed Lesson 6 including vocabulary, phrases, the passages, and the story in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as sang songs, reviewed animals, and continued to learn more about Chinese New Year from YouTube clips as we approach the year of Pig/Boar.
