Weekly Newsletter for 1/18/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

I’m currently working on finalizing our field trip to CuriOdyssey on Thursday, May 16th. Thank you to the parents who are donating towards the cost of the field trip and the bus. At this time, we have enough chaperones and will not be able to accommodate any more parents on the bus. Once we hit our fundraising goal, I will work on the permission slips and the schedule for the day. Please make sure any checks have your child’s room number in the “memo” section and is addressed to “Stonebrae School” and not to the PTA.

Please note that there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, 1/18 due to observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This Week in English Language Arts…

We have been working on ph/gh digraphs, contractions, and identifying main idea/detail. In writing, we have been learning about distinguishing between a fact and an opinion. We are learning from mentor texts about how to write our opinion passages by stating our opinion and giving very specific details to support our reasons. (ie. “It tastes good” vs. “It tastes sweet and creamy.”

This Week in Math…

We have been learning about measuring different shapes in centimeters, estimating, and the properties of plane shapes and solid figures. We estimated the sides of various shapes and measured the sides to find the perimeter. Also, we talked about sides, faces, and angles/vertices for different plane shapes and solid figures.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; time; and currency. We started Lesson 6 including vocabulary, phrases, the passage, and the story in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, learned mini-lessons from mystery science, watched YouTube clips about Coyote Peterson and their scientific terms in Mandarin. The Chinese New Year unit was introduced before the winter break and started after the break.
