Weekly Newsletter for 2/8/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

Thanks for helping to replenish the goodies for the prize box! Some of the wishlist items from Amazon shipped without notification of who purchased them. If I did not send you a message personally thanking you, it is because there was no note. Our 2nd graders appreciate your contributions to our class!

There are many schedule changes this month, so please make sure to keep track of the upcoming holidays and minimum days. There will be no school on Monday, 2/11 and on Monday 2/18. The week of the 25th will all be minimum days.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We studied the spelling patterns for ‘-ed’ and long ‘i’. For our comprehension strategy, we have started to learn how to make an inference and noticing when we infer in situations outside of a text. For our opinion writing, we have been studying many persuasive and opinion texts and crafting our own writing pieces. This week we learned how to add transition words between our reasons to help our paragraph flow.

This Week in Math…

Your child enjoyed estimating and measuring in inches, feet, and yards. We measured all sorts of things, including ourselves! We also learned how to estimate to the nearest centimeter, inch, foot, and yard. We measured various objects to the nearest inch/centimeter and plotted our data on a line plot and compared our results.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; calendar; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and continued Lesson 7 including vocabulary, phrases, and the passages in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, made lanterns, learned mini-lessons from mystery science and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We will make a card for Valentine’s Day.
