Dear 2nd Grade Families,
Thank you for all of the sweet treats on Valentine’s Day! Your child had an exciting week with 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day. We celebrated both days with themed activities that your child enjoyed.
Next week there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 18th. I will be out of town from 2/20-2/24 and will answer your messages the following week. If you have any important or time-sensitive issues, please contact the front office.
This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…
We have been studying how suffixes change spelling (y to i, double consonants, irregular) and ‘r’ controlled vowels (ir, er, ur). In writing, we learned how to write a final thought to persuade our readers to think or feel the way that we do.
This Week in Math…
Your child has completed their first math workbook and has received their 2nd workbook. They took home their first workbook and was advised to try the unit test at the end of the book as practice for the upcoming district math test (date TBA). This ends our measuring unit. Your child will be working with strategies to add large numbers/sums of money and reviewing addition with regrouping. For Valentine’s Day, your child enjoyed working in pairs to solve word problems to find clues to unlock a prize box.
This Week in Chinese…
In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and continued Lesson 7 including vocabulary, phrases, and the passage in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, made learned mini-lessons from mystery science, and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We continued to learn about the culture and customs of Chinese New Year with arts and crafts.
