Weekly Newsletter for 2/22/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

I will be out of town this week and will return any messages on Monday, February 25th. If you have any pressing concerns, please make sure to contact the office. The weekly newsletter will be posted early so you have access to the homework links.

Next week your child will be taking the trimester 2 math assessment. It would be helpful to review word problems, measuring, money, time, adding/subtracting larger numbers, and geometry.

Next week is a minimum day week with dismissal at 1pm every day. Please plan your child’s after school pick up accordingly. 

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

Your child is working on making inferences as their comprehension strategy. We are studying contractions and ‘bossy r’ spelling patterns. Your child is piecing together all the elements of an opinion writing piece and writing them on their rough draft papers. We will begin the editing and revising phase next week.

This Week in Math…

Your child is working with adding larger numbers and adding large sums of money. You can help your child practice by counting change. We are also learning subtracting bigger numbers, including ungrouping a ten into ten ones or “borrowing” a ten. There are many different strategies taught during this unit, so keep an eye out on the homework for review problems.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and continued Lesson 7 including vocabulary, phrases, the passage, and the story in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, learned mini-lessons from mystery science, and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We continued to learn about the culture and customs of Chinese New Year with arts and crafts.
