Weekly Newsletter for 9/6/19

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child started their prep classes. Our class will attend PE on Mondays. Please remind your child to wear PE shoes. Thank you to all the parents who have taken the time to drop by the classroom to say hi, purchased classroom supplies, and donated towards our classroom funds for upcoming projects and field trips.

For those who have ordered from the Scholastic Book Order, I will be submitting out class order on Friday 9/20 after school. The book box generally takes about 7-10 days to arrive at school.

This is a friendly reminder that Back to School night for Room 4 has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 19th from 6:00pm to 6:45pm.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We have been setting up routines for our Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Your child is building stamina during reading time to practice and apply the comprehension strategies that will be learning this year. This week we learned how to read a book in 3 ways (read the pictures, read the words, retell the story). For Writing, we are working on a school rules flapbook and taking turns telling stories in the author’s chair before we write them down on paper.

This Week in Math…

We have been working on “tenness” and subitizing (explanation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_tuvry4z_c) – We have also been reviewing our math facts and working on explaining our thinking with dot/number talks and word problems. You can help your child prepare for the year by helping them become fluent in adding and subtracting numbers up to 30.

This Week in Chinese…

Your child has been learning the morning calendar, weather, and math routine in Chinese. We have been learning about the 4 seasons of the year and describing them. Your child has been learning to recognize the Chinese characters for each word. We are also playing various games to review their Chinese from Kindergarten and 1st grade. This week we started an “All About Me” book where they are writing about themselves. We have also been learning about stroke order and practicing the fundamental strokes that form each word. Today your child learned how to use the “4 color” stroke order (red, green, blue, black, repeat) to correctly write their Chinese name in stroke order. The same assignment has been sent home as homework for the next week and they will be tested on it next Friday.

Homework…

The Chinese Name homework and reading log have been sent home in this week’s Friday Folder. Please help your child prepare for their test next Friday by having them write their name 2-3 times a day in stroke order. Please use the 4-color technique (red, green, blue, black, repeat) and quiz them to see if they remember the order. Homework is due on Friday with the Friday Folder.
