Weekly Newsletter for 9/13/19

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child has been starting to use their core curriculum for English Language Arts and Math. Today was the Mid-Autumn Festival and we celebrated the holiday by learning the story of Hou Yi and the 10 suns, designing our own mooncakes, and practicing the vocabulary we have learned by playing a board game that quizzed us on the Chinese words and facts about the festival.

Week 1 homework was passed out in your child’s Friday Folder. Please note that the homework packet is given to you early. The packet is designed to cover the content from Monday-Thursday and a Chinese dictation test on Friday. The following 2 weeks include Chinese lessons that review vocabulary from 1st grade on the topics of colors and fruits. Usually your child will not be familiar with the vocabulary and the reading passage because they will not start reading them until Monday. It is recommended that you work on the math and English pages first and wait until your child has been taught the Mandarin lesson before starting the Chinese portion of the homework. Please use the online resources to help your child read, practice, and study.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We have been integrating social studies in our reading texts as we learn about our government, the people in our government, and all about how laws work. Your child is learning how to read closely and highlight key details and annotate in the margins. This week we focused on the “or” spelling pattern. In writing, we are brainstorming topics to write about for our personal narrative unit in our Writing Folders.

This Week in Math…

Your child has been working with math mountains. We have been learning about fact families and how to count on to add and subtract. Please continue to practice their math facts with your child to help them become fluent with their calculations.

This Week in Chinese…

We have been working on our All About Me books and adding vocabulary to our Chinese dictionaries. We are learning everyone’s Chinese name and have been having a sharing time where your child briefly shares their opinion about a topic. We also took our first Chinese Dictation test this week and learned how to get set up for our Chinese tests this year.
