Weekly Newsletter for 1/8/16

Dear Room 4 Families,

Happy New Year! Your child had a great first week back from Winter Break. We were very productive this week as we wrapped up our All About writing unit and published a poem by going through the editing process and making a final draft to create a book.

In English Language Arts, we are using Flat Stanley as our mentor text as we ask and answer questions, make predictions, use context clues to figure out tricky words, use evidence from the text to determine character traits, and look deeper into the story to understand the character development and plot. We are putting a lot of focus into our reading centers. Students this week have been learning how to coach each other during partner reading. We have also started book bags for our independent reading time for your child to use and practice the reading strategies that we have been learning in class. The books in their book bags will be a mix of books that are at their reading level.

In math we are working on mental math strategies and base-10 with 2 and three digit numbers. We are also learning about money and time. We have been playing some fun games this week as well as using Front Row for individualized learning.
