Weekly Newsletter for 3/4/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week we settled back into our normal schedule. Your child has been working on the end of several units as Trimester 2 comes to a close next Friday. We will be going on a field trip to Lawrence Hall of Science on Friday, March 17th. Details and permission slips will be handed out soon. We will be using parent drivers, so your child’s car booster seat will be necessary for your child to attend. I will post a notification on the ClassDojo Story Wall with more information when the permission slips are sent home. If you are a driving or chaperoning, please make sure that all of the necessary paperwork is completed ASAP. Parents who are driving must complete an additional form in the office with a copy of the declaration page of their car insurance, and a copy of their driver’s license.

This week in English Language Arts I have finish assessing students for reading levels and have been creating new leveled groups that will start on Monday. We have been working on visualization and identifying genres of text in our Reader’s Workshop. In writing, we are wrapping up our opinion writing by publishing our best piece of writing and turning it into an accordion book. We will be starting our unit “Lifting the Level of Narrative Writing” on Monday.

In math, we finished taking our benchmark assessment and will be continuing with subtracting larger numbers using different strategies. Regrouping will be introduced after this unit once your child understands the place value concepts for adding and subtracting.

Participation in the Science Fair is mandatory for the Mandarin 2nd grade classrooms and will be part of the science and homework grades. If your child has not turned in their project proposal on Friday, please help them pick a topic that they would like to investigate and turn in the slip next week.
