Weekly Newsletter for 3/10/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

Friday was the last day of trimester 2! We wrapped up the trimester with celebrating our opinion writing unit by making books and reading them to the class. The last trimester of 2nd grade will be spent increasing the rigor of learning to prepare your child for third grade.

Next Friday, 3/17/17 is our field trip to Lawrence Hall of Science. Please remember to be at school on time with a bagged lunch and a booster seat. Students who are late and miss our departure time, or did not bring a booster seat, will spend the day in another classroom.

This week in English Language Arts we have been working on reviewing the comprehension skills that we have learned this year and putting them all to use in one book to “dig deeper” into the meaning of the text. We have been learning how to organize our thinking onto post-its during our Reader’s Workshop. In Writer’s Workshop, we have started our new narrative unit “Lifting the Level of Narrative Writing” by learning about what makes a good story by examining story structure. We will be learning how to focus on a small moment and expand on the writing using temporal words, descriptive words, adding voice, and narrative.

In math, we finished up addition and subtraction strategies for larger numbers and have moved onto regrouping strategies for addition and subtraction. Please remember to keep on practicing basic math facts, money, and time.
