Dear Room 4 Families,
Today Rooms 4 and 7 had such a fun time at Lawrence Hall of Science! Our students are so grateful towards the generous families that have donated their time and money towards making this field trip a success. We have one more field trip in the works for May to CuriOdysey. I’ll have the chaperon sign-up sheet available soon for those who are interested in joining us.
Report cards will be going home on Wednesday. Keep an eye out for them in your child’s backpack next week!
Next Friday, we will be having an in-school workshop from the Aquarium of the Bay where your child will be learning about global warming and the effects that it has on our planet and local ecosystem. It is also the day of Spring Pictures, so please dress your child accordingly as there will be some activities where your child may get a little wet.
This week in English Language Arts, we learned how to “dig deep” into one text by using our comprehension strategies to re-read and look for information so that we can understand the text that we are reading. We have also separated our word study center and will include them into our reading center rotations next week and focus on establishing routines for partner reading. In Writing, your child is learning about describing a “small moment” in detail, including examining the story structure of what makes an interesting story (introduce, problem, rise in tension, solution/turning point, end of the story, moral or lesson of the story). We have been taking turns in the author’s chair to share our stories with the class in the brainstorming and pre-thinking phase of our writing. We will start planning the different sections of our writing next week.
In math, we have been working on regrouping concepts for addition and subtraction. We have been working on hands-on construction and manipulation of tens and ones and transferring that knowledge to paper. Your child has been adding 2-digit numbers to 1 and 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. We will be working on these concepts for the next few weeks as we continue to add and subtract larger numbers (to the hundreds) and multiple numbers (up to four 2-digit numbers), using various strategies.
