Weekly Newsletter for 10/13/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you to Room 4 and Room 7 families for your generous donations of cash, prizes, school supplies, and wishlist items from our Amazon Wishlist. Please remember that the Chinese homework online is mandatory and not optional. Less than half of the class is completing and submitting their recordings to Mr. Chen. Your child needs to be able to remember and read the words from their homework in order to continue on with the following week’s homework.

This week in English Language Arts..

We have been working on comprehension strategies to pick “just right” books and reflecting on our choices with a partner. We have been studying plural nouns and adjectives.

This week in Writing…

We have started our Writer’s Workshop writing and have been working on rough drafts of our first story in our personal narrative unit.

This week in Math…

We are continuing with solving story problems. This week we have been identifying addition and subtraction word problems and using a variety of methods to solve each problem. We have also been working with “helpful partners” to prove our thinking and help correct misconceptions that our partners may have. We also learned two more problem solving strategies, matching pictures and comparison bars. Ms. Rubino handed out login cards for SumDog, a web-based math game that they play in computer class. Your child can play with their login information at home. I ask that your child not play Prodigy at home since I use it for assessment data.

This week in Chinese…

We are half way in the school unit and will start our writing using the words from our homework next week. Most students are completing their cor classwork on time, which is a huge improvement! Thank you for checking your child’s ClassDojo report and seeing if their work was completed on time and encouraging them to be focused. Please continue reinforcing good behavior and participation in the classroom. We had a quick unit on the Mid-Autumn Festival for Social Studies and we will return to our Science unit next week. Students are learning about rainbows and are memorizing the rainbow colors in order.

Homework..

Your child’s Raz-Kid’s account information was attached to your child’s homework packet today. Please encourage your child to read the books in the assignment room and take the quizzes to work at their “just right” reading level.
