Weekly Newsletter for 11/3/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child enjoyed fun Halloween crafts and snack center. Thank you to all of the generous families who made this possible! Due to the short week, we didn’t get to cover as much content as we usually do. The due date for classroom donations towards our field trip and classroom materials has been extended for another week.

This week in English Language Arts…

We are continuing the process of learning our literacy centers. Students are listening to reading and taking comprehension quizzes on Kids A-Z and learning how to take care of the library as they select “just right” book bags for their independent reading time. We started our literature study of “Stone Soup” which is a folktale that has traveled through many generations around the world. We will wrap up with a Stone Soup celebration on November 17th, the same day that we have the East Bay Vivarium visiting. Mark your calendars – that Friday is going to be a really fun day!

This week in Math…

We started Unit 2 – Adding numbers to 200. This unit involves skip counting larger numbers, place value, expanded form, regrouping, and word problems with larger numbers. This week we have been working on concepts to help your child learn place value. You can help them by counting by 10’s from a random number and having them stop close to 200. For example 78, 88, 98, 108, 118, 128, 138, etc.

This Week in Writing…

We are finishing up our personal narrative unit. We have revised and edited our own work as well as exchanged papers for peer editing. Your child is working on a final draft of their best work from this unit and will finish next week. We will be starting our non-fiction “All About” unit next week.

This week in Chinese…

This is the first review week on colors and fruits. We’ll review school terms next week. We’ll also begin the trimester 1 assessment next week. To help your child do well in the assessment, please encourage them to read fluently this past week’s and the coming week’s passage. Ask your child to translate them for you. You can copy (from Mr. Chen’s classroom website) and paste the passages into any online translator like Google Translate to get the gist of it. In Science, we have started our landforms unit. The goal is to see if animals and plants can live in the various landforms.

Homework…

Week 8 homework has a typo on it. There is no school next Friday (11/10 – Veteran’s Day), so the homework packet is due on Thursday. The Chinese dictation test will also be given out on Thursday, so it is important for your child to practice and study so they are prepared.
