Weekly Newsletter for 11/9/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thanks to those who had their child return the progress report. If you haven’t done so, please return it by Monday.  Also, a big thank you to the parents who have donated towards our classroom supply and field trip fund. We are expecting the East Bay Vivarium visit next Friday, November 17th to be an exciting and educational experience for your child.

One of the highlights of 2nd grade is the annual Stone Soup celebration held on the last day before the Thanksgiving break (also on November 17th). Please keep an eye out in your e-mail inbox for an important message from our Room parent Annette regarding how you can help.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-up Sheet
The 1st trimester is coming to a close next week. Report cards will be passed out during parent conferences in the week of 12/4. Mr. Chen and I are combining our conferences together so you will get to meet with both of us at the same time in order to discuss your child’s progress so far this year. Since we are combining conferences, time slots are going to be tight to accommodate all 44 families.
We’ve created an online sign-up sheet on Google Sheets. Please write your child’s first and last name in your preferred time slot. Please do not move or delete someone else’s name. Here’s the link to sign up:

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been continuing our literature study of Stone Soup by comparing and contrasting the differences between each story and relating it to the country of its origin. Right now our Stone Soup story has traveled to China and your child has been engaged and excited about how the soup ingredients and celebration have changed. We have learned how to use the classroom library and have started our literacy rotations. In writing, we have been going through the editing, revising, and publishing phase of narrative writing and have started on non-fiction writing.

This week in Math….

We have been working with place value concepts. This week your child learned about expanded form and adding ones, tens, and hundreds. Your child was also very excited to review the skills we have learned in our adaptive learning game on the Chromebooks called Prodigy.

This week in Chinese…

We finished the 2nd week of trimester 1 review and have administered most of the assessments. We’ll finish the remaining assessments early next week. Nearly everyone finished their 2 core worksheets this week. The class as a whole is becoming more diligent in their work.

Homework…

Please remember to complete the online portions of the homework and send your recording to Mr. Chen each week. The link to the online homework is here:  https://sites.google.com/site/17to18chen/homework/week9mandarinhomework
