Weekly Newsletter for 11/17/17

Dear Room 4 Families,

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who made the Stone Soup Thanksgiving Celebration a success and memorable event for all students. Your child also loved the visit from East Bay Vivarium and had the opportunity to see, learn, and touch around 20 different types of reptiles, arachnids, and amphibians. Pictures from Friday are posted on the class story and on your child’s personal story in ClassDojo.

I will be out of the country the week after Thanksgiving break and will be unable to respond to your messages in a timely manner until 12/4. Please direct any immediate questions or concerns to Mr. Chen or the office.

Please sign up for your child’s parent-teacher conference via Google Doc by 11/28 by 3pm. The document will be locked and parents who have not signed up will be assigned a conference time. After 11/28, please contact me for any scheduling changes. You will still have access to view the document to check your conference time.

This week in English Language Arts…

We started our weekly reading rotations and are learning which days our reading groups go to which center. We have been enjoying hearing Stone Soup variation stories from around the world and oddball versions.

This week in Writing…

We have been working on “All About” writing, creating a book where we are the experts teaching someone about what we know. This week we focused on getting ready and taking the Fall writing task where your child selected a topic that they were familiar with and wrote an “All About” book to teach their subject to the reader.

This week in Math…

We have been working on place value concepts, especially with understanding that 1 ten is equal to 10 ones and vice versa. We started regrouping concepts, with the new “put the ten on the bottom” strategy, which is different from the traditional putting the ten on the top.

This week in Chinese…

We started the clothing unit this week and we finished all the reading assessment. In science we continued with the landform unit. We finished the mountain landform and will move to the next landform on forest. In writing, we have started an All About Me writing, which we try to incorporate all the terms we learned so far.

Homework…

Instead of a regular homework packet, the Heritage Doll project is the homework during the Thanksgiving break. The Heritage Doll is due on Monday 12/4, and oral presentations will be held throughout the week. We will post the Week 10 homework packet on the homework webpage on Friday, 11/24 if your child wants to get a head start. The actual hard copy of homework packet will be sent home on Monday, 11/27 when we return from the break.
