Weekly Newsletter for 2/23/18

Dear Room 4 Families,

We managed to pack in so much learning during this short week! This week I have been working on assessing your child’s reading level. We will be taking a math benchmark test next week that covers the learning we did during trimester 2. Please note that Monday, February 26th is an extra minimum day.

This week in English Language Arts…

We have been continuing with Stanley’s Adventures in Flat Stanley, Stanley in Space. We have been learning about genres and sub-genres of books and how to distinguish if a book is non-fiction or realistic fiction. We have also been working on el/le spelling, and doubling consonants when adding a suffix to the end of a word.

This week in Writing…

Due to the short week, we have not had much writing time. This week we have been continuing with opinion writing and will be working on editing, revising, and final draft next week.

This week in Math…

We finished with unit 3 and took home workbook 1 to review. We started unit 4 and started on our second workbook with a quick review of money and adding bigger amounts of coins. We used coin cards to construct different combinations of 25 cents and learned the conversions for a dollar. Next week we will be taking our benchmark math test and continuing with our math lesson after the test is completed.

This week in Chinese…

Even with one day less and all short days this week, we managed to review the terms from animals and the passage from back in week 15. We touched on some adjectives to describe people during our morning work. Also, we started our song writing for our showcase. Students were put in groups of 2 or 3 and they decided on an animal that they will write beginning next week. We didn’t do much in Science, Social Studies, and Writing because of the short week.

Homework…

Week 20 homework has been passed out in this week’s Friday Folder. You can view the homework page here: https://sites.google.com/site/17to18chen/homework/week20mandarinhomework

Please remind your child to write the Chinese titles of the books they read on iChineseReader. Leaving the reading log blank in the packet will result in one grade lower automatically.
Also, please help your child write a coherent paragraph in English in the packet. We see their writing lacks focus. For example, if the topic sentence is “An animal that I’m scare of is …” many students wrote “I’m scared of lion because they roar. I’m scared of snake because they bite. I’m scared of bat because they look creepy.” They need to focus on just one animal and then expand on it, rather than listing many animals. We hope you get the idea.
