Dear Room 4 Families,
Welcome to the first week of trimester 3! Can you believe that your child is going to be a third grader soon? Report cards will be sent home next week. Please look over and review with your child. Then please sign and return the EMPTY envelope to school by Thursday, 3/29. The report card is for you to keep at home.
If your child chooses to participate in this year’s science fair, and you’re willing to support them throughout the entire process, please let me know by 3:00 pm, Monday, 3/19/2018. I’ll send home the information sheet on Tuesday, 3/20/2018.

This week in English Language Arts…
Your child applied the monitoring and clarifying strategies to their books during their reading workshop time. Your child identified a time where they had to slow down because they didn’t understand what they were reading and used various strategies to help clarify their understanding. We have also been working on close reads to learn how to go back to the text to find and prove our information.
This week in Writing…
We have been working on our “small moment” personal narrative writing. We have been learning about story structure and what makes for an interesting plot. We have also been examining the plot of small moment stories by Kevin Henkes to learn how to stretch a moment into a story with detail. Your child brainstormed several small moment stories that they will be writing about in the weeks to come.
This week in Math…
Your child has been learning how to ungroup a ten to subtract two and three digit numbers. We have been learning about specific scenarios for subtraction such as subtracting from two zeroes, subtracting with only one number needing to be ungrouped, subtracting three-digit numbers with a two-digit number answer, and also learning that not every subtraction problem needs to be ungrouped. Please help your child practice at home by checking their homework and giving them extra practice with the types of problems they are struggling with.
This week in Chinese…
Both classes worked really hard this week for their song writing for the showcase. They all did a wonderful job writing, memorizing the lyrics, and coming with meaningful hand motions. I’ll post to your child’s ClassDojo profile next week. Next week each class will choose one song to present in the showcase. Both classes will learn both songs to sing in the showcase. In Chinese language arts, we started the posture lesson. Students have been learning to describe actions and things in a park. In science we started the landform desert. In Writing we are wrapping up our Opinion writing and will start to present their masterpieces next week. The YCT test will be on Wednesday, 3/21. Please make sure your child is at school on time and is well-rested, eaten breakfast, and had a chance to go to the bathroom before school.
