Weekly Newsletter for 4/27/18

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week we have been busy preparing for our Mandarin Showcase tonight. We look forward to seeing you and your families if you are able to come. The show starts at 6pm. Please refer to the posts on ClassDojo for more information. If you take any pictures, please share pictures and videos with me and Mr. Chen to share with the rest of the families.

This Week in English Language Arts…

We have been focusing on non-fiction stories and are working on distinguishing “confusing books” that have both fictional and information elements.  We have also been learning about author’s main purpose (to persuade, to inform, to entertain) and identifying the author’s main purpose across various texts. We are continuing with working with homophones, prefixes/suffixes, compound words, and context clues.

This Week in Writing…

We have started our “All About Writing with Research” unit. Your child is completing a scavenger hunt with a partner to find and use different text features. This will lead to our big group project where we will collect information about an animal from various sources and create an informational brochure.

This Week in Math…

We wrapped up our adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping with word problems and have moved onto a short unit for time and graphing. We are working on learning the difference between AM/PM, telling time and writing time to 5 minutes, and measuring time.

This Week in Chinese…

We had a busy week of learning Chinese and getting ready for the Mandarin Showcase. We finished the shopping lesson and students did a great job learning to write the terms and the passage. In social studies we started the Hua Mulan mini book and the students were really into this story. In writing we worked on the beginning of narrative writing.
