Weekly Newsletter for 3/8/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

This week your child enjoyed visiting the wax museum hosted by the 6th graders and learning about famous African-Americans. Your child has been busy getting ready for the Mandarin Showcase and for the Youth Chinese Test in the upcoming weeks.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We are finding more opportunities to infer in the texts that we are reading. Your child is learning the difference between describing a character and character traits. We are studying the “oi/oy” digraph and the “el//le/al” spelling patterns. In writing, we have continued with the last part of the writing process for opinion writing by editing, peer editing, and publishing our final drafts.

This Week in Math…

Your child has been learning how to ungroup when subtracting from 2 and 3-digit numbers. We are covering different subtraction situations and identifying when we need to ungroup. Please check your child’s returned work in their Friday Folder and help them finish their incomplete work and help them fix problems that are incorrect.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and introduced Lesson 8 including vocabulary, phrases, dialogs and the passage in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, learned mini-lessons from mystery science, and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We made booklets and continued to learn about Chinese culture and tradition.
