Weekly Newsletter for 3/15/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

This week your child enjoyed learning about water conservation and the water cycle through an assembly called Earthscapades. Our 2nd graders have been busy preparing for the Mandarin Showcase next week and will be rehearsing as a group for our big event next Friday at 6pm. Please refer to the parent newsletter for additional details regarding what color to wear. All 2nd grade students will report to Room 7 for the showcase as I will be in the cafeteria running the music/sound for the event.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We have been working on plural nouns and irregular nouns. We learned the suffix -un and /oo/ spelling patterns. This week we have been continuing with making inferences in both fiction and non-fiction texts. For writing, we are finishing our opinion writing unit and have turned in our best final drafts for our writing portfolio. Our next writing unit is small moment writing for personal narratives.

This Week in Math…

Your child is continuing to use what they know about place value to subtract 3-digit numbers with and without ungrouping. We have applied this skill to subtracting money in both cents and dollar decimal and writing our own equations from word problems.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and introduced Lesson 8 including vocabulary, phrases, dialogs, the passage and the story in class. We did the bell work, read digital books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, learned mini-lessons from mystery science, and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We continued to read about Chinese culture and tradition.
