Weekly Newsletter for 4/12/19

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

I will be out of the country until Sunday, April 21st. Please direct any immediate questions or concerns to Ms. Li or the office. Please remember that the Famous American Biography assignment was passed out last Friday and Week 29 homework will also be passed out early for students to work on if they choose during Spring Break. Please do not turn in Week 29 homework when we return from Spring Break, it is due on Friday, April 26th.

Spring Break is just around the corner. There is no school from 4/15 – 4/19. School resumes on Monday, April 22nd.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We are studying the aw/au spelling pattern, contractions, and building vocabulary. Students in both Room 4 and 7 are excited to work on publishing a “real” book that they will collaborate on together after Spring Break. We are still working on small moment writing and this week we have been focused on editing and revising and some students have already started on their final drafts.

This Week in Math…

We started a short unit on time where we reviewed the hour hand and minutes. Your child was taught to move the hour hand past the hour depending on how far into the hour is. For example, if it is 4:45, the hour hand would be closer to 5 than 4 on the analog clock. We also worked with conversion of time and date. We will be starting a unit on graphing and charts. Your child will be working with different types of measurement and data analysis when we come back from Spring Break.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; shapes, time; and currency. We reviewed some math concepts in Chinese and continued with Lesson 8 including vocabulary, phrases, dialogs, the story and the passage in class. We did the bell work, read digital books, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, learned mini-lessons from mystery science, and their scientific terms in Mandarin. We continued to learn about our community, read stories about Chinese culture and tradition.
