Weekly Newsletter for 10/18/19

Dear Room 4 Families,

Your child had a great time exercising and raising money for the PTA this Wednesday during the Husky Trot. They were super excited to play with bubbles and wear their pajamas to school today.

Progress reports were handed out today. Please keep in mind that the grades are currently conservative and based on the work we have done in the first half of this trimester. The reading grade is based off of your child’s current reading level. I have not finished assessing all students at this time, however I have assessed all students who are reading below grade level expectations. The final report card grade may change from the progress report as our units move on from first grade review and are assessment based. Please sign and return your child’s progress report and return it to school by next Friday.

We will be working on a craft and making a Halloween Snack Mix on October 31st, which is a minimum day. If you are able to donate a snack towards our snack mix, please sign up on our google doc linked below. Items that are not donated will be purchased from our classroom/field trip funds.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cF4Bqh0ZlPomTJ6fm1gkjuhX7EVi9TjElh3125VQrtA/edit?usp=sharing

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We have been studying the long “I” spelling patterns (i, ie, igh, i_e), regular and irregular plural nouns. Our current ELA topic is “Characters Facing Challenges” and we are studying fiction texts with various characters that overcome challenges.

This Week in Math…

We have been looking at various word problem situations. We learned how to draw a matching picture, use comparison bars, and learned about word problems with not enough information and too much information.

This Week in Chinese…

We have been continuing to learn about our social studies topic on citizenship. Your child is learning how the vocabulary in their homework and texts relate to how we run our routines in the classroom. There is ongoing assessment with Level Chinese to place your child in their proper reading level. Once their level has been placed, I will send home the information for you to read books at home. Please be patient as assessments are time consuming.
