Weekly Newsletter for 1/10/20

Dear Room 4 Families,

Welcome back from Winter Break and happy 2020! I hope everyone had a relaxing holidays. This week your child has been very busy learning and getting back into the habit of our classroom routines.

We will be starting Star of the Week next week. I will be randomly selecting a few volunteers to start off the routine and then I will assign students for the rest of the year. The Star of the Week can choose to be line leader/ender, take the lunch carts to the cafeteria, and they run our calendar routine. The Star student will also be responsible for taking care of our class mascot Husky and writing about their adventures in the Husky Log. When their poster is completed, they will bring back the Husky pack and present their poster to the class on Friday. If there is no school on Friday, the Star will do these activities on Thursday. Please be mindful of bringing the Husky Pack back to school so that the next student has enough time to complete their activities.

Field trip permission slips have been sent home today. Please complete all areas marked with a star and sign/date your name on the bottom. All fields must be completed and turned in by Tuesday, January 21st.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We introduced a turn in date for “Writing About Reading” where your child will write weekly letters about the books that they are reading in class. This week we reviewed long vowel spellings, the -ph digraph, and learned about identify and using text features. In writing, we have been working on writing an opening, closure, and adding more detail to our sentences for our informational writing unit.

This Week in Math…

We are learning about estimation and measurement in centimeters and meters.  Your child enjoyed creating meter length measuring tapes and measuring various things in the classroom. They are currently estimating and measuring each other’s heights and recording their data, analyzing it, and plotting it on a line plot. We will resume with measurement and data next week.

This Week in Chinese…

We are on our second week of sports/exercise. This week your child played some fun new games to help them build and retain their new vocabulary. We also completed assignments using the words and grammatical patterns that we have learned throughout the year. Your child is being introduced to new paragraphs that include the vocabulary words that have been taught to them since Kindergarten until now, and working on answering reading comprehension questions. This week’s sentence structure is a more complex way to ask a question. (会不会, 喜欢不喜欢, 要不要, 想不想, 看不看。。。)

This Week’s Homework…

Level Chinese logins have been passed out today. The login information is attached to your child’s homework packet. Please have your child read books at least twice a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Have your child write down the CHINESE title of the book in their reading log. All levels are unlocked for your child to access, so you may need to monitor them to ensure that they are reading books that are appropriate for their level.

There is no app that you can download, so help your child navigate the website and login so that they have access. There is an instructional video on how to use the website here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu1Jn5V3dXY&feature=youtu.be
