Weekly Newsletter for 1/17/20

Dear Room 4 Families,

This week your child has been enjoying a measuring frenzy as we learn how to estimate and measure in centimeters, meters, inches, feet, and yards. Our field trip to Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos is scheduled for next Thursday, January 23rd. If your child has not turned in their permission slip yet, they need to be submitted by the end of the school day on Tuesday or they will spending the day with any late students in Room 18. Stay tuned to ClassDojo for further information on Wednesday.

As a friendly reminder, there is no school on Monday, January 20th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. School will resume as normal on Tuesday, January 21st.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

We are studying the silent ph digraph and the 3 sounds of -ed. As we continue into non-fiction texts and all about writing, we are studying how authors craft their books with engaging opening sentences, how they close their writing, and how they use text features to help their reader understand what they are learning. Your child is also learning to distinguish the differences between all about writing version how to writing. This week they are working on editing and revising their informational paragraphs.

This Week in Math…

We are working on measuring in both the metric and imperial system, plotting information on a line plot, analyzing data, and we have started a new unit on coins and adding money.

This Week in Chinese…

Your child has been enjoying various games and activities to help them remember the vocabulary for our current unit of study about pets. This week we are highlight the fact that there are only 3 new characters to learn from our 3 dictation terms and that the characters that we are learning can be combined with others to create new terms.

Level Chinese logins have been distributed in last week’s Friday folder. Please have your child read at least twice a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Your child can log their books on their reading log by writing the Chinese title. Since logins have been distributed, the Chinese reading is now considered part of the homework grade. The Flat Stanley project is due back at school on Monday, January 27th. Please go over the journal with your child so they feel prepared to present their project that week. Your child will be expected to know who took their Stanley on an adventure, where they went, and also to read a page in their journal to the class.
