Weekly Newsletter for 12/21/18

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

Thank you for all of your lovely smiles, cards, and gifts this week. I feel very appreciated! This week we have been getting in the holiday spirit with our spirit week themes. Your child attended a Winter Concert hosted by Ms. Moyle and enjoyed various Holiday themed activities. We are on Winter Break until January 7th, 2019. If you are planning to send Stanley on an adventure to another city/state/country, please make sure to mail him soon or he may not make it back in time to share on Monday, January 14th.

This Week in English Language Arts/Writing…

Our comprehension focus has been envisioning and author’s main purpose. We have been looking at the books we have read and deciding what the author’s main purpose was when they wrote it. We are practicing envisioning/visualizing as we read various texts and while we have been listening, learning, and writing our own poems. Your child has studied various types of poems and tried their hand at writing their own.

This Week in Math…

We have been working on real life situations with math and answering word problems to determine how to calculate solutions. Your child took home a practice math test for Unit 2 this week. They were asked to use it to help them study for the trimester 2 benchmark math assessment since many of the same question types will be on the test.

This Week in Chinese…

In our Mandarin class, we continue to reinforce the class and school expectations, routines and procedures; classroom expressions; numbers; days of the week; directions; time; and currency. We reviewed Lesson 5 including vocabulary, phrases, passage and story in class. We did the bell work, read picture books, retold the story, practiced character strokes, tried to make complete sentences as well as played academic games, sang songs, and learned a mini-lesson about mystery science and its key terms in Mandarin.
